PLACES TO STAY & THINGS TO DO IN PORTUGAL & SPAIN

PORTUGAL

Portugal has much to offer as a holiday destination - a rich seafaring past, nostalgic town and city life, mild winters and hot summers, golden sandy beaches swept clean by Atlantic tides, a country landscape of vineyards and wild flowers, orange, almond, olive and cork trees - our selection of Portuguese properties stretches from north to south. Even if you only have one week’s holiday, some of our properties will accept a short stay outside the high season  and at very reasonable prices, enabling you to split your visit and explore different parts of Portugal... The international airports of Porto, Lisbon and Faro can be reached between 2-2 ½  hours flying time from most of Europes main cities.

Lisbon Coast & Tagus Valley- The capital of Portugal is situated on the river Tagus and the city and its surrounds has much to offer.  The city can be described as contemporary and buzzing, yet in a slow and relaxed pace. Modern architecture blends in with ancient monuments, clanking trams take you around the quaint “old quarters”, whilst a zest for living is reflected in an insatiable appetite for music and nightlife.  Lisbon is rich with a history of exploration and discovery with many buildings and monuments reflecting its maritime past, and nearby, are the must-visit towns of Sintra and Cascais.

Described by Lord Byron as “this glorious Eden”, Sintra has been recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 and is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty and historic interest; whilst the quaint old fishing port of Cascais, situated on the coast, is now a glamorous seaside resort with a wide range of restaurants and shops, excellent tennis and golf courses, plus a major casino at Estoril. The Tagus Valley (between the Alentejo & Ribatejo provinces) on the other hand, is an area of horse rearing and bullfights, great wines and gastronomy.

Two great bridges over the Tagus river (old and new) connect the capital to excellent motorways to southern Portugal...

The Alentejo province of Portugal is an area of massive prairie landscapes, dotted with sleepy white washed villages as well as an outstandingly beautiful 160 km long coastline.  Portugal’s best kept secret has serene and hospitable people, historic cities and ancient traditions, local gastronomy and excellent wines, as well as a wide range of arts and crafts.

The country’s best know holiday region, the Algarve, is famous for its golden sandy beaches washed clean by Atlantic tides and championship golf courses with year round playing.  This province of Portugal has 150 miles of coastline stretching east from Cabo São Vicente to the Spanish border, but just 30 minutes inland and you enter another world where quaint villages, Moorish castles, market towns, orange groves and almond blossom abound!
