QUINTA DE SÃO SEBASTIÃO ~ SINTRA, LISBON COAST, PORTUGAL
Cozinha Velha - Double Bedroom Casa do Jardim - Dining Room Casa da Mata - Sitting Room

QUINTA DE SÃO SEBASTIÃO FULL DESCRIPTION:

The Sintra mountain range is without  doubt, an area of  outstanding natural beauty and historic interest, offering much to explore and enjoy, whilst the town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts some excellent attractions such as enchanting palaces, castles and gardens open to the public, the Museum of Modern Art and the Toy Museum.  Other suggestions are a romantic carriage ride through the town, a tram ride to Praia das Maças (a charming seaside village nearby), sightseeing in Lisbon (trains into the center take about 45 minutes), playing roulette at Estoril Casino or shopping/dining in nearby Cascais. There are also excellent golf, tennis and riding facilities nearby and several Atlantic beaches within a short driving distance.

Situated amidst the serene and lush scenery of Sintra, the 18th century Quinta de São Sebastião offers three of its estate cottages for self-catering rental, each with 2 bedrooms, and all benefiting from views over surrounding hills and neighbouring palaces: “Cozinha Velha” has been converted from the old palace kitchen and is attached to the main estate building; “Casa do Jardim” is detached with a small garden; and “Casa da Mata” which is also detached, is located in a sunny disposition bordering a wood. The cottages retain many original features and are furnished with a mix of antiques and modern pieces, are charming but practical for holiday use.

The grounds of the estate include a child’s swing, gardens to walk in, parking (although a car is not necessary) and a large swimming pool (approx 18 x 8 meters) which is shared between cottages clients and the owners when in residence.

THINGS TO DO

  • Ride a horse carriage through Sintra and enjoy the stunning scenery!
  • Portugal’s national song  is mournful and sad and accompanied by guitars  but quite an experience!  We are happy to recommend a number of restaurants (in Lisbon) if you wish to listen to some “Fado"
  • truly unique way to explore Lisbon´s more traditional quarters is from a tram  - “Tram 28” runs between Cemitério dos Prazeres (Pleasure Cemetery!) and Graça (one of Lisbon’s oldest quarters) going downhill past the Basílica da Estrela to Praça do Camões, Chiado and the Baixa (central shopping  areas); and then up again past the Igreja de Santo António       (Lisbon’s patron saint) and the Sé Catedral (Lisbon’s cathedral), passing near the  Castelo de São Jorge and many narrow and winding roads all the way to its destination.  Alternatively, the recently renovated red  “Colinas de Lisboa” Tourist Tramcar, has a  recorded commentary (in several languages) and operates every day throughout the year. Round trips start at Praça do Comercio and last approximately 1 ½ hours
