PLACES TO STAY & THINGS TO DO IN PORTUGAL & SPAIN

SPAIN ( INCLUDING THE BALEARIC ISLANDS)

Spain´s remarkable light and stimulating vitally are always present wherever you visit. Our properties here are spread from Madrid and the Extremadura province, Andalucia, and through to the Balearic Islands. The main international airports in the mainland are Madrid, Seville, Gibraltar and Malaga; whilst Mallorca is the main gateway to all the other islands and has a major international airport with regular flight connections from many European cities. But there is also a wide-range of low-cost flights throughout the summer direct to the islands; as well as a number of ferry services from mainland Spain and between the islands.

Madrid & the Extremadura includes not only the vibrant capital of Spain for either leisure or business travel; but also one of the most spectacular but least known provinces of inland Spain.

21st century Madrid is a city re-inventing itself, a place throbbing to the rhythm and expression of new ideas and the freedom of the post-Franco era, yet bound together by an enduring sense of historical continuity. The old and the new, bubbling together most harmoniously. Some of Europe's finest art collections can be found at the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia Museums; whilst the renovation and pedestrianisation of the network of narrow streets around the Puerta del Sol have made walking through the area a great pleasure. But Madrid is also a place for enjoying the essence of Spanish life, and spending some leisurely time in a tapas bar!

Bordering Portugal on the West, the Extremadura province comprises some 17,000 square miles of very varied and impressive terrain and landscapes, as well unspoilt cities and villages of great historical and cultural interest - heritage towns such as Trujillo, Merida, Caceres and Guadalupe are just a few.

With its Mediterranean climate, Andalucia in southern Spain is popular as a holiday destination. Hot summers and mild winters coupled with rich folkloric traditions are still expressed in everyday Andalucian customs, cuisine and architecture. Don’t miss an opportunity to join a “Fiesta”, watch the locals dance flamenco, or visit historically rich towns and cities such as Ronda and Seville. The peaceful countryside is ideal for nature walks and horseback riding, whilst lively coastal towns such as Marbella and seaside resorts like Sotogrande, offer a wide range of shopping facilities, sports and nightlife.

The three main Balearic Islands each offer a very individual atmosphere:

Ibiza has long been known for its lively night life, but La Isla Blanca also has much to offer the discerning and sophisticated traveller looking for a peaceful escapist holiday, with unspoilt rural landscapes of pines, almonds, olives, fig and orange trees, charming villages and secluded beaches. Situated between Africa and Europe, the island encompasses the culture of both continents in its architecture and interior design, giving it a sense of style and an atmosphere of the exotic – which is reflected in the properties we feature.  D’Alt Villa (a World Heritage Site) is Europe’s most ancient fortress and from its position high above Ibiza town looking down to the port, provides great sightseeing, shopping and evening dining. For the more active there is golf and tennis, a wide range of watersports and two water parks; whilst a boat cruise to the tiny nearby island of Formentera with its Caribbean like coastline is a must!

Mallorca is justifiably famous for its spectacular mountain scenery, sophisticated marinas, and palm-fringed sandy beaches; and the old part of the capital Palma with its narrow medieval streets, has much architectural and historical interest. But the essence of Mallorca is the peace of its rural areas, the acres of almond groves, the unhurried pace of village life and the secluded coves that can be found around the island. The villas we feature here have been chosen for their high standard as well as their rural location, allowing our clients to explore and enjoy the contrasts of the island and then retreat to the comfort and privacy of a lovingly restored farmhouse, that are the sample architecture of the island.

Beautiful Menorca is the second largest island in the Balearics but is the least known. It's smaller and less glamorous than Majorca and a lot quieter than Ibiza, but offers genuine charm and excellent restaurants, numerous beaches and an excellent range of watersports, tennis, horse riding, and interesting walks. There is also a lively cultural life and the chic marinas of Mahon and the historic town of Ciutadella are not to be missed. Just 2 kms south-east of Mahon is the attractive port of Es Castells, lined with colourful Georgian houses - the villa we have for rental here is set on a hillside on the edge of the sea with spectacular views over the port, and within an easy stroll down to the harbour for a meal or drink.
